3D MODELLING + PRINTING | MAKER BOOTCAMP

This workshop aims to overview the rapid growth in 3D printing (additive manufacturing), the current industry and its future projections. The presentation will be focused on creative art and design while also elaborating on other uses of 3D printing by demonstrating how 3D printing works, the various types of 3D printing processes available, their benefits and limitations, CAD design and available materials.

This two-day workshop program will immerse you in creative studies covering all aspects of 3D modelling and printing and how these processes can be applied to a create an object out of thin air.

The workshop will be split into 4 key learning areas:

Step 1: Converting an idea into a 3D model:

Using either CAD (computer aided design) programs, a 3D scanner or sourcing a model, we will demonstrate how to turn your creative idea into a computational 3D model.

Step 2: 3D Model to Slicing Software:

Once you have your 3D model, we will show you the how to convert this into an STL or OBJ file and manipulate the scale, orientation and placement.

Step 3: Slicing Software:

We will demonstrate how a 3D printer reads a model and the settings you need to change (as a designer) to benefit you. This step is the difference between a successful print and a failed print. We will walk you through the terminology and how it changes the model.

Step 4: Printing and Post Processing:

Once the print and print bed has cooled the part will need to be removed, Supports and rafts used during the printing process will need to be carefully removed. Finishing becomes very important for this part of the process be it sanding or using acetone vapours the process depends on which filament was used and what the intended purpose of the part is.
